Construction Leadership Convenes to Grow Workforce Pipelines Across Region

The Bay Area Council convened top employers in the construction industry for the first-of-its-kind Occupational Council this week (Feb. 19) to address workforce challenges facing the industry and opportunities to strengthen the talent pipeline across the region. Among the attendees were CEOs and top leaders from Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction, Nibbi Brothers General Contractors, Plant Construction, Rosendin Electric, Shorenstein, Swinerton Builders, Webcor, and XL Construction. Employers discussed the importance of upskilling labor within the existing construction workforce, working with community colleges to further align program curriculum with industry needs, and grow construction apprenticeship programs throughout the region.

With Governor Newsom’s proposed goal of 3.5 million new units of housing by 2025, a strong, robust and skilled labor pipeline will be critical to meeting the demands for much-needed housing development in the Bay Area and the rest of California. The Bay Area Council is honing in on construction workforce demographics to establish an accurate breakdown of the construction labor gap in the region, which will inform solutions developed through the Occupation Council.
