Connecting Students to Careers at SFO

For the second consecutive year, the Bay Area Council’s Workforce of the Future Committee partnered with the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to engage young people with career pathways in aviation, tourism, and hospitality. “Working at SFO” brought together over 160 high school students to meet with aviation and hospitality employers at SFO, including Bay Area Council members United Airlines and Alaska Airlines. The day began with tours of airport facilities. Students saw the airport in action and engaged in conversations with staff of the airport, airlines, and small and large businesses that operate across SFO. Students got a sneak peak of the under-construction Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport and had the unique opportunity to stand on the airfield to watch planes coordinate take-off and landing across the San Francisco Bay.

Following the tours, students had the opportunity to connect with employers offering information, internships, and jobs at a lively career fair. A senior from San Mateo High School commented that “everything is open—there’s going to be positions for everyone.” A sophomore noticed that “it’s an interesting and diverse place to work. There’s a lot of things under one roof here.” The main complaint? The event had a long waitlist, with many more students eager to attend. We look forward to welcoming them next year.
