LinkedIn Report Highlights Importance of Council’s Upskilling Work

The pace of hiring may slow nationally in the coming months, according to a recent report by Bay Area Council member LinkedIn that highlights the importance of getting smarter about educating, training and upskilling workers to meet future workforce needs. Using data from the 155 million workers with profiles on LinkedIn, the report found hiring down 1 percent over the past year and down 3.5 percent in the Bay Area from January to February. The report also found the Bay Area has the second-highest skills gap—defined as the gap between supply and demand for a specific skill—in the nation behind New York City and has the greatest skills shortage of any metropolitan area in the country.

To address these issues, the Council is partnering with employers, educators and others from around the region to convene Occupational Councils to better align curriculum and workforce development and training programs to meet future job needs. The Council has also launched a website—www.ourfutureworkforce.org—that provides up-to-date data on workforce supply and demand across a wide range of industries.
