Tech Apprenticeships Building Momentum throughout the region
As the technology sector continues to grow its innovation footprint throughout the Bay Area, employers are examining new ways to connect local, diverse talent to jobs in technology. On Wednesday (April 24), employers, educators, and non-profit partners gathered at the Bay Area Council to discuss ways to grow competency-based apprenticeships in the technology industry. The Council’s Workforce of the Future Committee partnered with TechSF (an apprenticeship provider through San Francisco’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development), Urban Institute, and City College of San Francisco to put on the event.
Employers learned how to build new apprenticeship training programs as well as grow their existing apprenticeship programs. Competency-based apprenticeships measure progress on how proficient workers are at various skills rather than the scheduled duration of the program. This approach can speed up completion of apprenticeships, getting qualified workers into the workforce faster. The Workforce of the Future Committee currently is developing a collaborative regional model focused on expanding participation in tech apprenticeships.
