Release the e-Scooters

The Bay Area Council applauded a decision this week by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority that will allow for the expansion of e-scooters on city streets. e-scooters and other so-called micro-mobility transportation technologies represent an important tool in solving critical first- and last-mile connections for transit commuters, reducing single occupancy automobile trips, eliminating greenhouse gas emissions, and providing mobility to underserved communities. The SFMTA decision comes after a successful pilot program that helped in the development of sensible regulations for the operation of e-scooters. Council member Scoot (recently acquired by Bird) was one of two e-scooter companies to participate in the pilot program. Under the new permanent e-scooter program, companies that apply to provide services must meet a number of requirements for where they can operate, installing built-in locks and maintaining a 24-hour complaint center. In addition to supporting statewide legislation to expand the use of e-scooters, the Council is also working with transportation officials from around the region on ways to accelerate new mobility and micro-mobility solutions for first and last mile.
