Connecting Immigrants, Refugees to Tech Jobs

There are nearly 2 million immigrants and refugees currently in the U.S. who have college degrees from their home countries but are unemployed or working far below their skill level. The Bay Area Council’s Workforce of the Future team, in partnership with Upwardly Global, today (Nov. 22) hosted the third annual Technology Career Fair for Immigrants and Refugees. Fifteen employers, including several Bay Area Council members, came together at the Autodesk Gallery to speak to over 80 immigrant and refugee job seekers about open positions at their companies.

The buzz throughout the event was electric, with both employers and job seekers eager to connect. “It’s great being here today, everyone is so optimistic, and the job seekers are all direct and know exactly what they want” said a recruiter from Alaska Airlines. Upwardly Global works with clients to translate their education, skills, and professional career abroad into the U.S. workforce. “My life has changed since getting in touch with Upwardly Global, I put my hand up and said, ‘Hey I need some help’ and they helped restructure my resume and helped me understand the work culture which is so different than what I was used to,” said job seeker Sachin.

Immigrants and refugees bring a unique perspective to the workforce, based on their diverse experiences, helping to problem solve more creatively. The Bay Area Council is excited to partner with Upwardly Global to build more career pathways for job seekers from around the world and looks forward to continuing this partnership.
