Fiscal Crisis Growing for Cities, Counties

State and local governments are facing a growing fiscal crisis as the COVID-19 shutdown (see below) starts to hit budgets. Gov. Newsom is projecting a $54 billion deficit and the League of California Cities said cities and counties statewide are facing $9 billion in red ink. Elected leaders are already planning deep cuts to a wide range of vital public services and programs, along with new tax proposals. Bay Area Council CEO Jim Wunderman joined KQED Forum this week to discuss this mounting crisis and share his plan for a statewide Economic Recovery Bond that would help avoid the deepest cuts and bridge the state until the economy reopens.
