Bernard J. Tyson’s Legacy Lives
The legacy of the late Bernard J. Tyson, former Kaiser Permanente Chairman & CEO and Bay Area Council Chair, can be defined by his life’s work: changing systems to support social justice and equitable health for the whole person. Bernard’s widow, Denise Bradley-Tyson, and the American Heart Association (AHA), an organization Bernard believed in deeply and served on the board for 10 years, have created the Bernard J. Tyson Impact Fund to continue Bernard’s passionate pursuit of affordable and equitable health and social justice.
The Bernard J. Tyson Impact Fund focuses on reducing the social and economic barriers to health by investing in local social entrepreneurs and organizations that have a vested interest in solving the challenges in their communities. The Fund is an “impact first” fund, taking the best practices from venture philanthropy and building upon it with the impact investing expertise and track record of the AHA’s national investment team and infrastructure.
The Fund received instrumental support from philanthropists, Lynne and Marc Benioff, whose generous $1M gift will fund proven solutions in San Francisco and Oakland enabling under-resourced communities to access healthcare, nutritious food, housing, and COVID-19 testing.
