Regional Ferry Service Awarded $4.45 Million Federal DOT Grant

In great news for Bay Area water transit, the Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) was awarded a $4.45 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to support expansion of its regional passenger ferry service. The Bay Area Council was instrumental in creating WETA and has championed regional ferry service for decades; we congratulate WETA on receiving this much needed and deserved award.

“This grant provides a crucial capital infusion to help us rebuild the aging Main Street Alameda Ferry Terminal,” said Bay Area Council CEO Jim Wunderman, Chair of WETA’s Board of Directors. “WETA has made significant investments in Alameda in recent years as we seek to build a world-class ferry system in Bay Area. Thank you to Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris and Representative Barbara Lee for their support for Bay Area ferry investment at the federal level.” WETA also recently released a new video highlighting the benefits of traveling via ferry, featuring testimonials from passengers and crew.
