Council Urges Supporters to Send Governor Newsom Letters Backing Housing Bills

Two bills the Bay Area Council sponsored to address California’s housing crisis are awaiting Governor Newsom’s signature. Letters are due by Thursday, September 3, for the Governor’s consideration. The Council urges supporters to send a note to Governor Newsom (templates available below) urging that he sign these bills into law:

AB 69 (Ting) establishes a new program in the State Treasurer’s Office (STO) to help homeowners finance additional housing units, including accessory dwelling units (ADUs) and junior accessory dwelling units (JADUs), and authorizes the California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) to issue revenue bonds to fund the program.

AB 831 (Grayson) makes changes to the process for development projects approved by the streamlined, ministerial process created by SB 35. The bill provides a path to modify approved development projects prior to the issuance of the final building permit required for construction and specifies that local governments must approve and construct public improvements provided in conjunction with the project in a manner that would not inhibit, chill, or preclude the development.
