Council’s Advocacy Helps Secure $1.2 Billion for BART

Gridlock may rule the day in Washington, D.C., but that didn’t stop the Bay Area Council from helping unlock $1.2 billion in federal funding for BART’s program to dramatically improve service along its Transbay corridor. The federal Department of Transportation grant is the largest BART has ever received. Behind the strong leadership of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Bay Area Congressional representatives, the Council was proud to add its voice in advocating for this critical funding. In a call to Council CEO Jim Wunderman following the announcement, BART General Manager Bob Powers thanked the Council for its work in D.C.

BART’s Transbay Corridor Core Capacity Program will have generational benefits for the Bay Area’s regional mass transit and transportation system, adding hundreds of new BART cars, modernizing ancient safety and operational technology and increasing the speed and frequency of service along the region’s busiest commute. The added capacity will also be critical in helping BART safely resume full service as the economy reopens.
