Remembering Affordable Housing Champion John Stewart

Posted In:

The Bay Area Council lost a good friend and California lost a great champion for low-income housing with the passing of John Stewart on Sept. 5. John was a larger-than-life figure who founded the John Stewart Company in 1978, growing it from three employees to 1,500 and positioning it as one of the leading low-income and affordable housing builders in the state. His company built and managed thousands of affordable housing units and in 2018 was ranked the #1 affordable housing provider in the state. John was a dedicated member of the Council’s Housing Committee was never shy about sharing his beliefs about housing affordability and its impacts on social equity and justice. He challenged the status quo and conventional thinking every day, but did it in such an affable manner that made everyone cheer for him. We extend our deepest condolences to his entire family.
