Living While Black in America
Stories are legion of fearful parents of Black children having to caution them about how to conduct themselves in encounters with police. The fear stems from a long history of police violence and harassment against Black people, including the tragic killing of George Floyd earlier this year under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer. It’s a fear Bay Area Council Board member and Siebert Williams Shank & Co. Partner Gary Hall is all too familiar with. His son has autism, which makes him even more vulnerable. His son’s story was featured recently in an ABC 7 news feature—Our America: Living While Black—highlighting how Black people with disabilities are 55% more likely to be arrested. It’s a troubling, heartbreaking and eye-opening story that offers important lessons for addressing racial inequity and injustice in our society.
