Council-Backed Housing Near BART Station Approved

More than 750 units of new housing near the West Oakland BART station that the Bay Area Council endorsed have been approved by the city’s Planning Commission. The transit-oriented development will replace a parking lot and designate 240 of the units as affordable. Retail and office space are also included in the development. The project, which still requires City Council approval, is made possible in part by AB 2923 (Chiu and Grayson), legislation the Council supported in 2018 that gives BART planning authority over development on its land. 

This is the type of policy solution that is perfect for our region. Building housing next to transit addresses our joint housing and traffic congestion problems while reducing our reliance on cars.
