Charging into the Future on Road Usage Charging
As California moves to electrify its transportation sector, funding from gas taxes that is critical to maintaining the state’s transportation infrastructure is expected to dramatically decline. That’s why Sen. Scott Wiener (San Francisco) has proposed legislation (SB 339) that would extend until 2027 a California Road Charge Pilot Program launched in 2015 to examine charging road users based on vehicle miles traveled (VMT). Wiener joined the Council’s Transportation Committee this week to share information about SB 339 and hear from our member companies about the issues behind road usage charging. Under SB 339, the current pilot program would also be expanded to include a fee collection component.
