Berryessa TOD Project Advances in San Jose

A mixed-use development directly adjacent to the Berryessa BART station in San Jose that proposes to create 3,450 residential units and up to 3.4 million square feet of office space was unanimously approved by the City Council this week (June 29). The project will move through additional planning stages, commission meetings and hearings as more negotiations between vendors at the existing flea market and owners of the site continue. The Bay Area Council has long supported transit-oriented development (TOD) of this nature. We encouraged the San Jose City Council to engage in productive discussions with all stakeholder groups and will continue to work with City Council members towards a solution that allows the project to move forward with final approval.  The widely publicized Market Park development would bring much needed housing and jobs next to public transit in San Jose. Additional discussions in the past week assuaged many concerns from the vendor’s association over the development’s impact on the flea market, yet negotiations will continue and the Council will remain engaged as the plans are further developed. For questions on this or to engage in our housing policy work, please contact Senior Policy Manager Kelli Fallon.
