Important Milestones for Expanding Ferry Service to Berkeley
A plan to restore ferry service to Berkeley that the Bay Area Council has advocated for is moving ahead at full throttle, with the announcement in recent months of new funding to pay for the project and the reopening of a public pier that had fallen into disrepair. The city of Berkeley is partnering on the project with the Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA), which is chaired by Council CEO Jim Wunderman and has committed $5.7 million to bring ferry service to the city. The Council was instrumental in the creation of WETA. The latest developments on restoring the public pier and bringing ferry service to Berkeley was detailed in a recent commentary in Berkeleyside that was authored by Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin and Berkeley City Council members Rigel Robinson, Terry Taplin and Rashi Kesarwani.
