Council Congratulates North Bay Sen. Mike McGuire on Being Named Next Senate Pro Tem
The Bay Area Council this week congratulated state Sen. Mike McGuire, who represents a wide swath of the North Bay and North Coast, for being named the next Senate Speaker Pro Tem, succeeding Sen. Toni Atkins. McGuire’s selection comes after Assembly member Robert Rivas, whose district includes parts of Santa Clara County, took the reins as Assembly Speaker in June. It’s the first time in decades that Northern California legislators have held the two top leadership roles.
“Our hearty congratulations go out to Senate President Pro Tem-designee Mike McGuire on his selection to lead the state Senate,” said Jim Wunderman, President and CEO of the Bay Area Council. “Sen. McGuire is a thoughtful, pragmatic and solutions-focused leader and we look forward to working with him and Speaker Rivas and being a resource and support to both on the critical issues affecting our region and state, from housing and homelessness to transportation and climate resilience.
“Since our inception, the Bay Area Council, which was instrumental in the creation of the Bay Area Legislative Caucus, has been a foremost voice working at the intersection of business and government and convening top leaders to address our biggest challenges and move the Bay Area and California forward. We’re glad to see that our region’s interests, as well as those of all California, will be represented by two such incredibly talented and dedicated Bay Area leaders.”
