A Bridge (and Estuary) Not Too Far
The Bay Area Council was proud to join local leaders and stakeholders this week for a ferry ride in the Oakland-Alameda Estuary to explore the opportunity of connecting two burgeoning East Bay neighborhoods with a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge. The Oakland-Alameda Estuary Bridge Project would provide an active transportation link between Alameda – where new housing and commercial development has sprouted in recent years – and downtown Oakland. The Council is strongly supportive of revitalizing these waterfront neighborhoods and offering residents an enjoyable travel alternative to the often-congested Posey Tube.
While construction on this visionary project is still years away, the Council is working on a near-term solution with the Estuary Water Shuttle , an innovative public-private partnership that plans to launch a ferry shuttle service next year to connect Oakland’s Jack London Square with the new housing developments in Alameda Landing and Marina Village. This commonsense transportation solution will provide a comfortable and convenient travel option for residents and commuters traveling across the Estuary.
