Breached Bay Levee = Climate Resilience
With the help of a large excavator, Bay water recently poured through a broken earthen levee and began filling an old, 300-acre industrial salt pond near Menlo Park. It marked the start of the latest Bay restoration project funded by Measure AA. The Bay Area Council helped lead the campaign to pass Measure AA in 2016, partnering with Save the Bay and Silicon Valley Leadership Group. And former Sen. Dianne Feinstein, long a champion of Bay restoration, helped acquire the Menlo Park salt park land that will now become new wetlands. Measure AA annually provides an estimated $25 million for a range of restoration projects around the region.
Restoring wetlands around the Bay is an important climate resilience strategy that buttresses the shoreline against rising tides, softens the impact of extreme storms and protects against flooding. Measure AA is administered by the Bay Restoration Authority. Council Senior Vice President Adrian Covert serves on the Authority’s Advisory Committee helping decide where and how to allocate funding for various projects.
