Planning Under Way for 2026 Regional Transportation Funding Measure
While much attention is focused on the upcoming March primary election and the November Presidential election, it’s not too soon to start thinking about the November 2026 election. Alt least if you’re into the future of Bay Area regional transportation. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) voted last Wednesday (Jan. 24) to pursue state legislation this year to authorize the Bay Area to seek voter approval for a regional transportation funding measure as soon as November 2026. The proposed measure seeks to sustain and improve public transit service, repair local streets and roads, and improve mobility and access for all residents.
The Bay Area Council has been heavily involved in the development of the proposed framework, and testified last week about the importance of crafting an expenditure plan that will have significant funding to transform the transit rider experience, while also supporting road and highway improvements for the vast majority of Bay Area residents that depend on cars to move around the region.
The authorizing legislation (SB 925, Wiener) is now working its way through the Legislature. Join the Bay Area Council Transportation Committee next Friday, February 9 at 1:00pm as we host a virtual meeting with Sen. Wiener to discuss this proposal and next steps.
