Voters Validate Council’s Ballot Endorsements

The Bay Area Council ran the table in San Francisco in yesterday’s primary election. Proposition A, a $300 million affordable housing bond, sits at 68% yes, with a 66.6% required threshold. Proposition B, a bogus attempt to fool voters into voting for higher taxes was soundly defeated. Proposition C, a proposal to create tax incentives for office to residential conversions, appears headed to victory. And Proposition E, an effort to restore some authority and sanity to policing in San Francisco, is ahead by a whopping 20 points. Proposition F, which would require drug screening for those applying for public assistance, is leading by an even wider 26-point margin. All in all, it was a bellwether election and a strong signal from the voters of San Francisco that a course correction was in order. On the state ballot, Proposition 1, a $6.4 billion bond to support emergency housing and mental health programs, was hanging on to a narrow lead.
 

In the race to replace Assemblymember Phil Ting, San Francisco Supervisor Catherine Stefani grabbed almost 56% of the vote and will likely face off in the general election against David Lee, who was sitting comfortably in second place. Elsewhere in the region, former BART Board member Lateefah Simon looks to be headed to Congress to replace the retiring Barbara Lee. Former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and sitting Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian are heading to a runoff to replace retiring Rep. Anna Eshoo, and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan is cruising to a very comfortable reelection. In the East Bay, Jesse Arreguin is leading the pack to replace termed out state Sen. Nancy Skinner in SD 7, and Assemblymember Tim Grayson is doing likewise in the race to replace termed out Sen. Steve Glazer. The race to replace Tim Grayson in AD 15 is too close to call at this point.
