Behind Council Advocacy, Waymo Gets OK to Expand
On Friday (March 1) state regulators authorized Bay Area Council member Waymo to expand its fully autonomous commercial ride-hailing service to more parts of the Bay Area and introduce its service in Los Angeles. The Council has been a vocal advocate for the autonomous vehicle companies navigating the state regulatory approval process and supported Waymo’s application to expand service on the San Francisco Peninsula from Daly City to Sunnyvale.
This self-driving technology is already making San Francisco roads safer, improving mobility and access for residents, and reducing the carbon footprint of trips by providing a zero-emission travel option. Now residents of the many communities up and down the Peninsula will have access to this safe, equitable, and sustainable transportation mode. The Council’s next Transportation Committee meeting will provide a comprehensive update on the status of autonomous vehicle deployment in the Bay Area and beyond.
