NO JOKE: DROUGHT PSAS USE HUMOR TO PROMOTE SAVING WATER
The Bay Area Council this week (May 25) announced that member company Comcast will begin airing a series of drought-related public service announcements (PSAs) to its millions of Northern and Central California customers featuring international pop superstar Lady Gaga and comedian Conan O’Brien urging residents to save water. The Bay Area Council Water Committee was instrumental in connecting Comcast with the group of organizations that developed the PSAs last summer, including Save Our Water, the California Water Foundation and the National Resources Defense Council. Comcast will air the PSAs 500 times per month through October 2015 on the company’s regional cable network Comcast Hometown Network (Channel 104), which reaches 2.1 million Bay Area households.

Comcast’s commitment to raising public awareness about the drought comes on top of its own efforts to reduce water use. Comcast reduced water consumption in 2014 by nearly 25 percent over 2013 levels, saving 11 million gallons. Comcast’s largest source of savings resulted from a 50 percent reduction in water used for landscaping purposes. The ongoing planting of drought tolerant flora will allow further reductions in water use for landscaping.
