Newsom-Appointed Group Releases Draft Report on AI
There’s much at stake for the Bay Area as legislators and regulators consider numerous bills and rules this year that have serious implications for our continuing AI leadership. Against that backdrop, the Bay Area Council welcomed the release this week (March 18) of a new report by a group created last year by Gov. Newsom to provide a framework for policymaking on frontier AI, taking into account the importance of innovation and establishing appropriate strategies to reduce risks. The draft report from the Joint California Policy Working Group on Frontier AI surveys AI research representing multiple disciplines to derive policy principles that can inform how California approaches the use, assessment, and governance of frontier AI.
The Council strongly believes that California must do everything possible to expand our AI leadership and avoid the rash imposition of the types of onerous and excessive regulations that can hamper competitiveness, reduce investment and slow progress in addressing our biggest challenges. We supported Gov. Newsom’s veto of misguided legislation last year that would have had a stifling impact on our fast-emerging AI industry and we applaud his leadership in taking a measured and balanced approach to AI regulation. The Working Group is accepting feedback on its report by April 8. To engage in the Council’s AI policy work, please contact Senior Vice President Matt Regan.
