Bay Area Council Tour Showcases Groundbreaking Carbon Capture Innovation

Last week, Bay Area Council members had the exclusive opportunity to tour Calpine’s Project Enterprise at the Los Medanos Energy Center in the East Bay city of Pittsburg, a cutting-edge carbon capture demonstration pilot that is redefining the future of clean energy.

Attendees witnessed firsthand how Project Enterprise is capable of capturing more than 95% of carbon emissions, proving that advanced technology can support a cleaner, more reliable electricity grid. The project is not only a testament to American manufacturing excellence, but it was also built using high-paying union jobs, creating economic opportunities within the local community.

This pioneering initiative underscores California’s leadership in climate innovation and highlights the state’s potential to secure additional Department of Energy funding for future carbon capture projects. As the need for sustainable solutions grows, Project Enterprise serves as a powerful example of how public-private collaboration can drive progress toward meeting California’s 2045 carbon emission goals.

The Bay Area Council through our Energy Committee has been a staunch advocate of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology as an indispensable part of meeting California’s 2045 climate goals as detailed in the California Air Resources Board 2022 Scoping Plan. The Council continues to educate policymakers and the public about the safety and reliability of CCS technology and will continue to support legislation that advances CCS development.
