Council and Community Partners Host President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Summit in Oakland
The Bay Area Council served on the local host committee for the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper Rising! Summit held in Oakland this week. This spectacular gathering featuring former President Obama, Stephen Curry, John Legend, Michael B. Jordan, Ryan Coogler and many others brought together communities, organizations, elected officials, cross sector leaders, and young people of color from all over the country committed improving the lives of young boys and men of color.
The Council’s work on the BAYEP project with our partners Leaders Up, the Urban Strategies Council, and PolicyLink was featured at the conference as one of the best examples of collective impact. As a part of the host committee, Economic Institute President Micah Weinberg also helped lead a Day of Service at Martin Luther King Elementary School in West Oakland on Monday where participants cleaned the school, upgraded the garden and hosted a community resource fair with mural painting and live entertainment and The Golden State Warriors, Oakland Athletics and San Francisco 49ers all pitched in and the day was sponsored by a generous grant from Alaska Airlines. Later in the year, the Economic Institute will be releasing a report, funded by Alaska Airlines, documenting the best practices from our BAYEP project which is a part of the Inclusive Economy programming of our Workforce of the Future effort.
