Rivas Emerges as New Assembly Speaker
Assemblymember Robert Rivas (D-Salinas) today released a statement announcing he has secured enough votes within the Democratic Caucus to become the next Speaker of the Assembly, replacing Southern California Assemblymember Anthony Rendon in the powerful position. Rivas said in a statement released on Twitter that he met with Rendon this morning to discuss the transition.
The second-term Democrat becomes the first Speaker to hail from a rural district, and Rivas highlighted his support for creating more affordable housing, investing in education and working to ensure access to clean drinking water and protect the coast. The Bay Area Council extends it heartiest congratulations to Speaker Rivas and we look forward to working with him on the many important issues facing the Bay Area and all of California.
