Council-Endorsed Housing Development in Daly City Wins Preliminary Approval

The Daly City City Council last week gave an initial OK to 1,200 units of new housing as part of a larger development the Bay Area Council had endorsed for approval. In addition to the housing, of which 10 percent would be set aside as affordable, the Serramonte Del Rey development, would space for childcare, retail shops, parks, and a new community garden. Proposed by the Jefferson Union High School District, the project is unique for its use of surplus district land not only to build housing but for the ongoing revenue it will generate for the school district to help retain staff and faculty that are often drawn to neighboring school districts with higher salaries and more resources. This project also includes over 100 units of already approved housing set aside for district staff and faculty.

Unfortunately, a number of opponents have organized in disapproval of the project citing concerns about the relocation of an existing community garden and wanting more affordable units, resulting in multiple delays from the City Council to bring the preliminary plan up for a vote. The Bay Area Council celebrates this approval and will continue to advocate for timely consideration of the project as it moves through the process.
